Johnson City is a small town in Robertson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General James K. Johnson who served as governor of Tennessee from 1859 to 1861 and then as U.S. minister to Russia from 1861 to 1867. The first settlers in Johnson City were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived here in 1838. They built a log cabin on the site of present-day Main Street and named it "Fountain." In 1840, they erected a frame courthouse which still stands today on Fourth Street in the center of town. A little later, they erected a additions to the courthouse which included a jail and post office building. In 1860, General James K. Johnson came here with his army during the American Civil War and he was elected governor of Tennessee on November 3rd,1861 after being selected by President Abraham Lincoln as his choice for this position because he had been an aide-de-camp to General Andrew Johnson when that president served as war secretary under President Polk during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). He resigned his commission in order to run for election as governor and won handily over two opponents who were also candidates for office at that time; John Coker and William McGeeithers (a lawyer from Nashville). Upon taking office on January 6th, 1861, Governor Johnson ordered all state offices be closed due to Confederate forces occupying Knoxville while southern troops were fighting near Memphis across the river into central Tennessee; this order caused much chaos within the government since many important governmental decisions had already been made weeks or even months before! Shortly after taking office, Governor Johnson issued an executive order calling for martial law in order to enforce federal regulations passed pursuant toPresident Lincoln's Executive Order 1088 entitled "An Order Regarding Military Affairs In The State OfTennessee". This order placed all citizens of Tennessee under arrest without having any charges filed against them and led directly to several mass arrests throughout eastern Kentucky and western Virginia where Union soldiers were searching for Confederate sympathizers (known officially as "Radical Republicans"). Governor James K.'Johnson's administration also saw some significant changes within local government including: creation of a Board of Education which provided education both public and private; establishment of fire departments which became necessary due to increased fires caused by incendiary weapons used by Confederate troops; enactment of laws regulating trade within state boundaries; construction of roads which relieved congestion within towns such as Clarksville NY & Chattanooga TN;;&the erection Completely new Schools - one School each at Clarksville NY & Chattanooga TN.; establishmentof Mechanics Institutesvillages now abound throughout Tennesse);&the opening up Of Western Tennesse To Farming And Manufacturing pursuits). After years spent implementing various social projects designed specifically towards African Americans such as providing free housing or education opportunities or repairing transportation needs such as improving roads or constructing bridges,[9] Governor James K.�Johnson left office on April 9th 1865 following passage of what is known As The Reconstruction Amendments Act Of 1865[10] - becoming only the second US governor ever impeached[11]). Johnson City was founded in 1819 by James Johnson, a Revolutionary War veteran and slave owner. The city was named for James K. Polk, the 35th president of the United States. The Jim Crow laws of the early 20th century kept African Americans from being able to live in Johnson City proper or even within its limits. The city's first school was built in 1821 and became known as "The School for Blacks." In 1865, Johnson City became one of the original 10 cities in Tennessee that seceded from the Confederate States of America. That year, Union General Ulysses S. Grant visited Johnson City and declared it "the Capital of Tennessee" because it had "not fallen into disrepair" since 1861. In 1868, Johnson City hired Isabella Stewart Gardner as its first municipal woman mayor and she sponsored legislation creating Nashville's first public park system with land donated by John Sevier Cooke. In 1907, voters passed a $5 million bond issue to improve roads, sewers and other infrastructure in order to support growth in the city during World War I. The war also helped spur economic development in Johnson City through job creation and new investments such as steel production which led to increased business activity around town and contributed to its rise as an economic center during this time period. In 1930, cotton mill owners closed their mills in central Tennessee due to competition from synthetic products made outside of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) constructed dams along the Cumberland River estuary acrossriver from Johnson City. This left many working class people out of work and forced many local businesses including small grocery stores, barbershops and taverns to close their doors or fold up shop when prohibition began on January 1st 1933 . After years of struggle against adversity local businessmen banded together with TVA officials to form a grassroots group known as Citizens' Committee Against Prohibition which successfully lobbied Congress for repeal of Prohibition less than two months after it took effect
