The name "Johnson City" was given to the town by General James Johnston in 1847 while he was serving as military governor of Tennessee. In 1795, the Creek Nation surrendered their land to the United States following a treaty known as the Treaty of Hardeman. As part of that treaty, President George Washington gave Creek Chief Oconee's daughter into American custody and she became known as Lady Washington. With this history behind it, Johnson City became an important commercial center for much of its early years. In 1837, Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Johnson City after becoming president on November 4th that year. From then until 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, Johnson City remained under Union control and saw only limited activity due to its strategically located location between Chattanooga and Murfreesboro. When Sherman's Union army arrived in town on October 9th 1862 to begin attacking Confederate positions around Chattanooga, however, things changed quickly for Johnson City residents when General Nathan Bedford Forrest assumed command of what would become one of history's most notorious guerrilla armies-the Forrest African Americans Brigade-in order to conduct offensive operations against Federal troops during the Battle of Missionary Ridge near here on October 11th 1862 Although many people fled or were killed during this battle (estimates range anywhere from 10-75% casualties), Mayor John Overstreet decided to stay and fight with his own men despite being outnumbered four times over (1/6ths Cherokee). Though he lost an arm during battle and sustained several other injuries including a brain injury which led him temporarilyblind later that same year,-overstreet refused medical attention until ordered to do so by Army surgeons; something which enraged some Confederate officers who accused him of treason Aftermath: After surrendering all battlefield possessions - horses, cannons etc.-to avoid seizure by Grant's troops upon return home following Missionary Ridge debacle (due largely to lack thereof), Forrest instead turned them over to Majestic Horse Troop commander Major David Denny who resold them back eastward for $4 per head One such horse dealer/dealer general active within postwar Reconstruction Era Tennessee had been Denny himself whose business empire grew out primarily from proceeds derived from sales made through similar tactics employed during Civil War
