Rock music began developing in Johnson City during the early 1830s when several musicians created informal gatherings to play various instruments around town square or at the local creek bank. These gatherings eventually developed into bands which played throughout central Tennessee until about 1840 when record companies began producing recordings of rural songs for sale nationally. This sudden influx of recorded music helped spawn new musical styles including Delta blues and Nashville country (later known as swamp pop). By 1860, Johnson City had lost much of its importance due to increasing industry development within nearby Chattanooga and Memphis eclipsing it as a center for rock music production and performance throughout central Tennessee. However, some remnant institutions such as the Baptist church still functioned until their closure in 1978 following heavy competition fromMemphis-based churches such as Elvis Presley’s Chapel (now Graceland)and Sam Cooke’s Memorial Auditorium (now Cooke Hall). Despite this decline however, many cultural icons associated with Johnson City – such as bandleader Fess Parker – continue performing regularly throughout central TN today
