Johnson City is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Johnson City was James C. Cotten and his family who arrived on February 6, 1819. They were the first white people to live in what would become Johnson City. The first store in town was built by John Ellis and it opened on December 10, 1820. In 1865, a post office was established in the town by order of President Abraham Lincoln and named for General Andrew Johnson which remained open until 1918 when it closed due to lack of mail service from Chattanooga. During World War II, many soldiers garrisoned at Fort Knox here before being transported back home to their units overseas. In 1948-1950 three episodes of "The Rifleman" were filmed here including episode 2 (also known as "The Battle Of Lewisville"). The show's sets were erected around downtown where most of today's stores are located including the original Woolworths building which still stands today across from the old courthouse square (now used as a park). Other locations include several homes on High Street and some military buildings on Battery Road near present day US Highway 61 south of town limits
