Johnson City was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and his wife, Lucy Bogan Polk. The city was named for General Andrew Johnson, who served as the United States president from 1847-1851. In 1865, after the American Civil War ended, Johnson City became a military garrison for Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) landowners. After World War II, the TVA turned Johnson City into a suburban community. Today, Johnson City is a small town with a population of around 10,000 people. Johnson City is located in southeastern Williamson County on the banks of the Tennessee River. It began as an agricultural town perched atop high hills overlooking the river valley and its namesake stream. By 1800, local farmers had developed rice plantations and raised cows and pigs on large lots near present-day downtown Johnson City. By 1830, several small businesses had opened in what is now downtown: Baptist missionaries’ house (built 1827), smithy (1833), grocery store (1835), bank (1837), post office (1839), cotton gin (c 1840). Downtown was platted in 1846 by Wm Hargrave as part of an overall plan to improve transportation links between Nashville and south central Tennessee via Highway 441/River Road/Johnson Creek Road/Tennessee Avenue. At first glance it appears that downtown may have been named for General Andrew Johnson – but this claim is without foundation – likely because he happened to be living at nearby Hermitage Manor at that time! On November 15th 1865 during Reconstruction era Johnson City officially became a municipality when all other counties in northcentral Tennessee were reorganized under new state laws following the end of Confederate rule within one year! Downtown experienced some modest growth following integration into municipal government but most primary development occurred along River Road which soon became known as “the Main Street of Jackson County” due to its importance as both trade artery and access point to points eastward through rural Williamson County including Memphis
