Jackson became an incorporated town on February 14, 1892. The first post office in Jackson was established on December 12, 1868. The currentJackson Municipal Stadium opened in 1956 and is home to the Knoxville Titans of the National Football League (NFL). The city's namesake and second mayor of Jackson was James K. Polk who served from 1865 to 1869 and again from 1870 to 1873. A statue of Polk stands outside City Hall as do other historical markers around the city. One such marker honors Confederate General William Taney with a bronze plaque that reads "1863-1875: soldier and orator; Agent for Southern Confederacy at Nashville." Another marker honoring Confederate General John Bell Hood shows his headquarters at this location before he moved westward into Oklahoma Territory during 1863-1865 campaign against Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army
