It is named for General Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachelle Van Buren. The first people to live in what is now Jackson were the Shawnee and Potawatomi Indians. A post office called "Jacksboro" was established in 1821, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1827, a group of Scotsmen led by Colonel John Donelson came through Hardin County and found land that would become Jackson on their way to explore new lands northward. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson and Rachelle Van Buren as part of an effort to curry favor with both parties involved in the negotiation of the treaty that ended the American Civil War (1812-1865). In 1830, two years after Grantsville had been founded as a trading post along the Cumberland River by Major Ridgely Smith and other pioneers, Mormon missionaries traveled through Hardin County looking for converts to their faith. One missionary was hired by J E Richards who opened up a store at Grantsville in 1835 but soon discovered that he couldn't get enough converts so he closed up shop. Richards' successors reopened his store under different names over time: Herald's Store (1836), First Methodist Church (1839), Richards & Co Store (1840), Richardson's Warehouse (1846). Finally, it became known as TheJacksonStore when James Fenton bought it from Richards in 1854. By 1860 there were 4 stores operating in Hardin County; only one - TheJacksonStore - still exists todayalthough its building has been destroyed multiple times over the years due to fire or weather damage. In 1840s there also developed around here what is now known as downtown Jackson which housed most of local commerce including prostitution along Broadway between Third Street and Fourth street with several other buildings north of Third Street such as "the white man's college" or "the black man's college." This area east of Broadway between State Route 601WNW and 602NSE remains today an active business district although most businesses have moved away since then because of increased competition from more recent development on East Broad Avenue adjacent to Interstate 55 resulting in loss or destruction of many historic buildings including this one In 1850s another store built southwest corner 3rd street westerly side road US Highway 12 about 2 blocks west side lot now used for apartments . There are numerous churches located throughout downtown today based off various denominations including Methodism Episcopal Baptist Presbyterian Reformed Lutheran etc.. Most notable historically however are/were Thomas Jefferson University located just northeast corner 3rd St NW near interstate 55
