Jackson, Tennessee was founded by James Robertson in 1806. The town was named for General Jackson who fought in the American Revolution. The city's first gun shop opened in 1827 and it continued to grow until it became a national center for target shooting. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Jacksons were among the first places to hostilities began. On September 12th of that year, Confederate General Robert E. Lee called upon residents of Jackson to rise up against their Union counterparts and assist him with his siege of Knoxville. Many citizens chose to turn sides, causing the city's businesses to close and its population to dwindle. However, many local gunmen managed to hold on as they defended their homes and families from the advancing Union army. In 1865, after the war ended, Jackson's gun shops reopened but this time they were focused on restoring order within the community instead of selling targets. The industry slowly regained its footing until World War II when demand for targets increased again due to warfare around the world.
