The Jackson, Tennessee, town of about 12,000 people was founded in 1817 by Major General Anthony Wayne and his father-in-law, Colonel James Polk. The site for the town was chosen because it had good soil for farming and became an important center for trade with the surrounding counties. In 1819, a small fort was built here to provide defense against Indian attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1830 and replaced by a more permanent structure called Fort Donelson. In 1834, General Andrew Jackson visited Jackson and pronounced the area around Fort Donelson “the most fertile country on earth” due to its many acres of cotton plantations. This led to increased trade with nearby Kentucky and Georgia, which added to the town’s prosperity. In 1839, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Donelson and destroyed much of the garrison before withdrawing back into southern Virginia. As a result of this attack, many residents fled Jackson for safer havens in Tennessee or Kentucky. The town slowly recovered from these losses but never regained its former glory. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down much of the city including both the old fortifications and most of the downtown business district. Although some damage still remains today (e.g., sidewalks are missing), overall it is considered one ofJackson’s most notable disasters due to its destructive impact on infrastructure almost two centuries ago
