Jackson is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 6,628 at the 2010 census. Jackson is twinned with Wroclaw, Poland. The history of Jackson goes back to 1796 when a group of families from Plantation No. 9 on the Cumberland River settled in what is now known as Jackson. The town was founded by Capt. John Wilkinson and his family on March 1, 1800, following the purchase of an area northwest of present-day Jackson by Colonel James Wilkinson for $1,000 cash and 10 cattle. The first settlers were Obadiah Smith and his family who arrived in 1800 and built a cabin on the east side of Mill Creek flowing through present-day downtown Jackson. In 1801, General Andrew Johnson visited Jackson while on his way to battle Fort Donelson in Alabama and praised its goodness and mildness; he then ordered Captain Wilkinson to establish a ferry crossing over Mill Creek so that supply trains coming up the Cumberland River could reach Fort Knox without having to go through Mobile or Chattanooga. From this point forward until 1810,Captain Wilkinson continued to manage affairs within the limits set by Major John Fenton--the first postmaster/wardenof courts established in Hardin County--and by Judge James Hogg (an early settler). By 1830 only about seventy residents lived inJackson; however local trade helped support its growth during this time period When Hardin County was organized into three districts on December 3rd,1830–the date which corresponds with Tennessee’s Statehood Day–Jackson became one of those towns within District 2 (southwest corner of today’s Hardin County). At that time it contained just twelve dwellings: six frame buildings erected between 1830 and 1840 by widow Mrs. Jane Cooksey Cheatham; four log huts (~1830) used as stores after wagonloads of goods brought over from Nashville; two log cabins (~1840) occupied intermittently by Thomas Chilton (180 acres); onecroft house (~1800), originally owned & operated by Captain Alex Caldwell (Caldwell sold it soon afterwards); two other houses (~1800) occupied intermittently by Negroes called “Nigger Jack” & “Negro Tom” because they did not have white owners; three partridges cooped up at night because there wasn't enough food for them indoors In 1835 the whole township except for three parts inside city limits—Allendale [now adjacent Shelbyville], Dysart [now Davie], & Pigeon Forge—were included within District 3 formed out of all Hardin County lines west of Nashville . When hard times hit farming areas around Memphis starting about 1840 prices for cotton went up 50%+, leading some farmers near Memphis to move their families into nearby Cove City ; however most people living near Decatur didn't leave until 1862 when Union troops burned down their homes there In January 1865 Confederate general Braxton Bragg came downriver from Corinth with orders to retake Vicksburg –a decision made later that day after Bragg's army had failed miserably against Union forces led by Ulysses S Grant During much speculation surrounding this event Jaxson citizens put up many billboards throughout county advertising "No Surrender" but nothing happened On July 4th 1865 Federal troops burned down all but one building in town being used as an arsenal during Reconstruction – effectively ending any hope for reconstruction or return home ever happening
