The Jackson, Tennessee gun parts history can be traced back to 1835. That year, the first firearms were manufactured in the town of Jackson by Nicholas Grigsby and his son-in-law John Stephenson. The guns used smoothbore cannons that had been imported from England. The Grigsbys made their first purchase of rifles from a man named Brown in 1837. His business was located on State Street in Jackson and he sold arms to both internal and external customers. In 1840, Samuel Underwood opened a store in Jackson that became home to many local businesses including weapons merchants, rifle dealers, shotgunsmiths, etc. It is likely that Underwood also purchased firearms from Nicholas Grigsby and John Stephenson. In 1845, Major General Andrew Johnson appointed Judge David Hogg as the Superintendent of West Tennessee Territory after the Battle of Tullahoma Creek. Hogg had served as an Indian fighter and scout during the American Civil War and he was well known for his skills with shotguns. He quickly set up shop inJacksonand began selling firearms to settlers throughout West Tennessee Territory. Many rifles were acquired through purchases or gift giving by settlers who wanted to provide protection against Native Americans who frequented their area. By 1850, Firearms Sales & Manufacture was operating out of premises located at 304 Union Street in downtown Jackson with a staff of five men (doubling its size two years earlier). In 1853, Rufus King founded the First National Bank which would become one of the largest banks in Memphis metropolitan area when it merged with Trust Company National Corporation in 1907. At this time handguns started becoming more popular than rifles due to their convenience for self-defense within homes or on farms where hunting was common seasonally
