In 1865, a man named Jesse James was captured and tried in Hendersonville, Tennessee. He had been shooting Confederate soldiers at a nearby plantation. The local paper reported that the gunman "fired twenty-three shots from his rifle without taking aim." After being acquitted of all charges, James moved to Memphis. There he met and married Martha Addams. They moved to Hendersonville in 1875, and Jesse James opened a grocery store there. The couple had two children: Jesse Jr., who became an outlaw; and Jane, who became known as the "Queen of the Mountains." In 1903, Jane died in a car accident on Highway 231 near her home. A few years later, Jesse Jr., who was then living in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife's brother John Lee Hotelnier Sr., shot and killed hotelier's father-in-law, John Wirtz III. As a result of this crime, Jesse Jr.'s trial began on April 26th of that year and ended on May 2nd with a hung jury verdict. Jesse James was eventually extradited back to Tennessee for trial on murder charges but avoided execution by posting $100 000 bond On July 10th 1906 he was found guilty but received only 6 months in prison due to illness contracted while behind bars
