In 1892, Hendersonville was the first town in Tennessee to have a public library. The library was founded by Reverend Julius E. Gibson and his wife, Emma C. Gibson, with the goal of providing "a place for all people to find information." In 1912, the Hendersonville Library added an organ to its collection. In 1961, the Hendersonville Library Board approved a $7,500 donation from Mrs. Mildred Ladd that provided the nucleus of what would become the current Hendersonville Public Library system. The donation also included $2 per month for thirty years toward building and maintainance of the library system; this money remains today one of the most continuous donations to our system. The first building on Main Street in Hendersonville was built in 1915 and became known as “The old White House” because it housed both local government offices as well as the library until it burned down in 1966. In 1969, when new Main Street Bridge were built across I-24 near downtown Hendersonville (the current site of First Baptist Church), construction began on another library building which would eventually become known as “The New White House” due to its new facade (shown below). The town prospered until the Great Depression when it went bankrupt. Hendersonville regained its prosperity during World War II as a munitions production center. The war left the town with a large influx of refugees and ended with the end of hostilities in 1945.
