The first European settler in what is now Hendersonville was Captain Robert Byers who arrived on July 5, 1796 with his party of thirteen pioneers from Maryland. He named his new land after General Hugh A. Henderson, one of the founders of Tennessee and later its Governor-General. After several years of exploration by Byers and his men, they found no good sites for a settlement and returned home on October 10, 1800 without finding any water nor any means of support other than their own strength and courage under difficult conditions They built a cabin near present day downtown on what is now Second Street which they called Green Gables because it grew abundantly wild grapes that were used for wine during this time In 1801 John Cranch moved from Winchester, Virginia to establish himself in what would become Davidson County as an editor and printer for the Nashville Gazette In 1809 he married into an influential family there named McMullen which continued to grow wealthy through cargoes of cotton shipped down the Cumberland River One important early development around this time may have been when Captn Robert Byers donated land north of town off High School Road (now Elmwood Avenue) towards what is now Midtown together with some slaves he had acquired while working as a planter on plantations near Natchez Mississippi For many years this property served as part of Trinity Episcopal Church until it was sold in 1898 To finance much needed renovations project begun on that date by Rev Wm Hamer this valuable piece of real estate became known as "The White House". By 1830 all but two families living within close vicinity east or west side Of High School Road had left for greener pastures elsewhere including Dr John Sheppard who took up residence where he erected a house still standing today On January 1st 1830 Samuel Morse located about three miles NW corner Of Dowling & Main Streets He started sending messages across country using copper wire leased from Mr Knox Colebrook early days railroad company At first these messages were only single lines but soon began to be forwarded along with others including those from political leaders such as James Ketchum who resided just over the road In 1837 commissioners appointed by President Andrew Jackson surveyed lands lying between Nolichucky River & Holston Mountains leading eastward To form Misery Valley And recommended erection Of A New Town Called ClarksburgWithin This Valley There Were To Be No Blacks Or Whites Possessed Alone Or Togetherlevying Any Civil Government Other Than That Which Could Be Imposed From Above thenceforth Erected New Town Inscribed On Top thereof Said Name Was Hendersonvilleybecoming One Hundred And Fifty Years True President Washington Territory
