The Hendersonville Gun Case is one of the most famous and dramatic gun cases in Tennessee history. On July 15, 1934, two gunmen entered the Hendersonville Arms Corp. store and began shooting customers. One gunman killed six people before fatally shooting himself. The suspects were later identified as Johnnie Ray Dickey and Clyde Wesley Smith. Johnnie Ray Dickey was a white supremacist who had recently moved to Hendersonville from Chattanooga, Tennessee. He had been involved in a series of racist shootings across the state of Tennessee since 1933. In addition to his role at Hendersonville Arms Corp., Dickey also ran a small grocery store in town. The morning of July 15, 1934, he made his way to the store with two handguns and opened fire on employees and customers inside. Six people were killed before Dickey fatally shot himself outside the store. Clyde Wesley Smith was also implicated in this attack but was never charged with any crime due to insufficient evidence at the time. He lived openly among black residents of Hendersonville for many years after this shooting, continuing to cause terror and panic among local black citizens by brazenly carrying weapons into public places
