They stopped at Hendersonville for water and food before continuing their journey. In 1822, John Crain founded Crain's Mills which became one of America's leading textile mills. He also developed a flour mill which operated until 1907. The community grew rapidly during this time as many people immigrated to Tennessee from areas such as England and Ireland due to new opportunities available in the state after its opening up to settlement by white men following the American Revolution. During World War II, Hendersonville was an important manufacturing center for munitions production because it had access to large stockpiles of aluminum ore found along the Cumberland River valley.
