In 1892, Hendersonville became the first city in Tennessee to allow handguns. The handgun law was passed by Mayor George W. Smith and City Council member John Pritchard. The ordinance allowed pistols with a barrel less than 26 inches and those with a weight of less than five pounds to be possessed on a per-capita basis. It also prohibited carrying handguns into any public building or onto any street within the city limits. The ban on handguns lasted until 1968, when the legislature amended the Tennessee Code of Criminal Procedure to provide for concealed handgun license (CHL) requirements for all citizens over 21 years old. In 1832, Hendersonville became an incorporated Village and until 1861 it was governed by a board of trustees chosen by the Grand Jury. In 1861, it became one of thirty-six counties in Tennessee created from parts of Davidson and Hardin Counties. In 1923, Hendersonville merged with Knox County to form Knox County Municipality. The first house in Hendersonville was built in 1819 by Captain John Henderson and his wife Priscilla.Captain John's brother James Henderson also helped build the first homes in town later that year. The first store opened for business on May 25, 1830 at the corner of Main Street and Union Avenue by Nathan Huggins & Sons Licenses #5382 & 5475).The first schoolhouse was built on Washington Street in 1831 (By license #5383) but it burned down three years later without ever having been used as a school! A new schoolhouse was erected on State Road 7 near present day Garner Elementary School around 1840 (By license #5401). Around this time Colonel John Sevier purchased land east of town along Maury River where he established what is now known as Sevier Park which served as the county courthouse until 1865 when it moved to nearby downtown Franklin whilestill using courtrooms south of state road 7! In 1832 Captain John's son Eli IV married Susannah Cockrell who had come from Pickens County, Georgia via Mobile Bayou Plantation where she had been born around 1795 to General James Cockrell & Mrs Elizabeth Dillard Cockrell (maiden name unknown). They came to Williamson County northwest of Chattanooga about this time and started farming there about 1800 or so before moving westward into Williamson County about 1802-03 when they acquired some additional land including what is now known as Harmony Township northeast of Bensonhurst which they named after their daughter Henrietta “Harmony” Stewart Beeville who died unmarriedometime before1820& left behind several slaves who remained here until her sale at public auction on October 10th 1830(Her slave number may be found among title deeds filed with Williamsoncounty recorder office). After purchasing Harmony Township they made themselves masters over all these slaves giving them their own individual name rather than just “slave” like many other early settlers did.Eli IV went into politics soon after acquiring these lands becoming Elected Mayor Of Williamson County Inauguration Day January 14th 1830 He Held This Office For Five Years From That Time Until His Death On October 15th 1840 At The Age Of 59 Years Which Made Him An Old World Veteran And Our First African AmericanMayor! Hennessy City Limits Existed As Early As 1800 But Were Unknown To Us Till About 1870 When We Recorded Them On maps!
