In 1852, Drury Bros., a general store and meat market founded by Isaac AsburyDRury Bros./Asbury Agrablehousing Co./Asbury Meat Market/ASBURY MEAT MARKET) opened on Main Street east of where today’s Patton Boulevard meetsGaillard Avenue. From this early store visitors could purchase groceries like flour, milk, butter, bacon grease etc., as well as items needed for farm work like hay bales etc.–all without leaving their homes! Today’s Patton Boulevard crosses Asbury Avenue just south of DRury Bros./Agrablehousing Company building which still stands today as a reminder of those pioneer days! One such early resident was Wm Hemsley who resided two blocks east of Main Street between Church and State Streets until his death in 1865 aged 81 years old! He had supplied goods to markets all over Great Britain before coming to America to start his own business interests here!
