Hendersonville is an agricultural town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 7,751 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County and home to the Hendersonville-Memphis metropolitan area. The first settlers in Hendersonville were white men who arrived in 1796 from Virginia. They founded a small community on the banks of the Tennessee River near present-day downtown Hendersonville. The community prospered for several years but then went bankrupt due to heavy debtors’ prison terms imposed by a local circuit court judge. The men who had invested their money returned toVirginia and resumed farming there. In 1802, three families moved from Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and formed a joint stock company to build a road linking Nashville with Memphis. This company became known as the “Henderson Brothers Road Company” because it operated out of Hendersonville until 1836 when it transferred its operations to Memphis. In 1819, Colonel John Sevier bought 1,200 acres (400 hectares) northeast of present-day Hendersonville from James Robertson for $2 per acre ($40 per hectare). He named this land “Hendersonvillette” after his father-in-law, General Andrew Johnson Sr., who had helped him purchase it during the War for Independence. Sevier developed this land into what is now the city of Nashville and built roads and bridges across the Tennessee River so that goods could be transported easily between those two cities. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched through Davidson County on his way to fight in Confederate service against President Abraham Lincoln duringthe American Civil War. When he reached Hendersonville late one evening local residents learned about his coming and they beganto prepare for battle by building trenches around their homes/roadsides; however Forrest never arrived and instead destroyed most of these defenses before withdrawing into northern Davidson County Later that year UnionGeneral Jubal Early invaded Tennessee Proper – much like Forrest had done two years earlier –and early morning on November 8th 1861 attacked Fort Donelson outside of Nashville while thousands lay besieging it from all sides; however Early withdrew without achieving any significant success within hours following engagements near Tennesseeville which saw many dead/captured soldiers including General Forrest himselfAfterward General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased some property eastof downtownNashVILLEfromAndrewJohnsonfor$10 per acre ($160 per hectare). Upon buying this land he renamed it "Fernwood" after Deputy Governor Samuel Patton Fernwood whose plantation bordered on what is now Fenton Avenue in eastern Nashvillenoctober1st1865.(This property would later become known as Vanderbilt Avenue.) A survey taken in 1870 showed that only 4% of Shelby Township's total population lived within five miles (8 kilometers) of downtown Nashville; however by 1880this figure had skyrocketed to 50%. By 1890only 2%of Shelby Township's total population lived within 5 miles (8 kilometers)of downtown Nashville while over 60% lived inside 10 miles (16 kilometers)of both town centerandDowntownNashVILLE itself! These changes were largely due to four large cotton plantations locatedwithin 5 miles (8 kilometers) or less radiusof DowntownNashVILLE:Ewing & Co., Hoggs Cotton Mill Site(later White Sulphur Springs), Laughlin Mills Site(later Clarksdale Mills),and Pickett & Swanns Factory Site(later Whitney Plantation).
