During World War II, many people from Hendersonville served in the military including: lieutenant colonel Willard Ransom Jr., captain Harry Pritchard III*, company commander(s) Byron Lovett IV*, sergeant First Class Dudley Nance* (USMC), airman 2nd class Royce Woodruff*, infantry soldier 1st class Everett Whelan* (US Army Rangers), artilleryman 3rd class Lewis Hargrave* ( Irish Nationalist forces), sailor 2nd class John Fenton* (U S Coast Guard Cutter "Arizona"),and truck driver 3rd class Leroy Wiggins*. In 1969, Donelson State Community College opened its doors with temporary students housed on two ranches near present day Interstate 24 across from UTN campus before opening its own buildings on November 9th after much public speculation about where the college should go given its location close to large concentrations of black student enrollment at Vanderbilt University and East Tennessee State University at nearby Menifee Mills Park which had been open for white students since 1915 when schools within Menifee Mills Park were integrated into Vanderbilt University under Sanders Board policy following approval by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency as Commissioner of Education Hendersonvillians continue to experience high quality education opportunities despite current competition posed by larger metropolitan areas such as Memphis or Jackson TN
