The town was founded in 1801 by General John Sevier and his wife Rachel Livingston. They named it after Greeneville Parish in England where they had been living while he served as a colonel in the American Revolution. The Seviers donated land to the town for development and construction began soon after their donation. The first store opened in 1802 and the first post office was established in 1805. The early settlers were mostly farmers who raised livestock and grew crops such as wheat, corn, peas, potatoes, and cotton. But with the arrival of railroad transportation and tourism during the 19th century, Greeneville became an important destination for people from all over Tennessee and Kentucky. In response to increased demand for housing during the 20th century, numerous subdivisions were developed across much of Williamson County; however, most of these areas have since disappeared or been abandoned due to various reasons including lack of available land or difficult access to education or health care facilities. Greeneville, Tennessee is a town in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first settler in Greeneville was John Wilkinson who arrived in 1786. By 1810, there were twenty-six residents and four businesses in the town. The town's first school opened on July 15, 1811 and taught children of farmers and other local people. The first courthouse was built in 1812 and served as the government center for Robertson County until it burned down in 1909. A new courthouse was built by 1913 and served as the town hall until it also burned down in 2009. Greeneville's importance decreased after the opening of state Route 6 south from Chattanooga to Nashville which bypassed it completely in 1922 when Interstate 24 became fully operational. However, its status has increased somewhat since then due to its location within just a few miles of both downtown Nashville and Vanderbilt University which are two of America's leading universities. The current community began to form around Greeneville when developers bought land near what is now Midtown Center for Technology about 1984-85 with plans to build a high-tech shopping mall called "Neptune". As development occurred nearby (and because Hurricane Katrina had destroyed much business activity along Interstate 24), Greeneville grew quickly into an important commercial center within minutes' walk of both downtown Nashville and Vanderbilt University - one that still functions largely unchanged today despite suburbanization around it over time
