It is part of the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General James Robertson in 1811 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. The post became an important center for trade with Kentucky and Virginia. In 1815, Greeneville was chosen as the site for the first capital of Tennessee. But within a year, it reverted to Robertson's original name, Greeneville. Some early residents of Greeneville were Drayton Dixon and his family, who settled in 1796 along what is now State Route 11 near present day Donelson Park; John Sevier and his brother Jameson built two houses on Main Street in 1824; Samuel French settled around 1830 near present day Slaughter Creek Road; and David Denton acquired land east of Slaughter Creek Road in 1830. A Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in Greeneville in 1842 by Reverend Wm Hoggard and dedicated on October 9th that year. The gift from Mrs Hoggard included a tract of land bounded by Broadway (now 5th Avenue), Cumberland Pike (now Elm Street), Springhill Pike (now Old Hickory Boulevard), and Highland Drive (now Laurel Avenue). Greeneville experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to its strategic location on one of three major transportation routes linking Nashville with Memphis and other states across the Southwestern Upland: The Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad ran throughtown from 1865 until 1954; The Louisville & Nashville Railway stretched through town between 1904 and 1945; and Ulysses S Grant visitedthe community twice during his tenure as President of the United States in 18501918 before becoming presidentincoln
