Greeneville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 7,017 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Greeneville is named for General James Troup who fought in the American Revolution and also served as a member of the Tennessee Senate from 1792-1800. The town has a rich cultural heritage dating back to its early days as an agricultural village. In 1819, Greeneville became one of the first communities in Williamson County to install daily newspapers and soon became known for its quality journalism. The town's nearby riverfront made it an ideal location for cotton plantations during the antebellum period, and today many of the buildings around downtown date from this time period including First Baptist Church (now Redeemer Presbyterian), Old Courthouse Square, and Maple Street Jail. In addition to its newspaper history, Greeneville also played a significant role in local politics during Reconstruction; when Nashville began reconstruction following the Civil War, parts of Williamson County were transferred to Nashville without consent from Greeneville residents who saw their community suffer financially as a result of laissez faire policies implemented by Nashville elites. Despite this setback, Greeneville continued to thrive through World War II until Separate Ownership thrust them into financial hardship; however they bounced back quickly thanks in part to support from local businesses and civic groups which staged boycotts against important industries such as textiles that had closed down due to wartime regulations barring production on munitions plants). After WWII, although some challenges followed such as declines in manufacturing jobs throughout TN after deindustrialization took hold (Greeneville experienced rapid growth rates in recent decades due largely to waves of inward migration), overall economic stability characterized much of postwar Greensville Today much like before it offers visitors friendly greetings upon arrival with wide open streets leading up towards downtown surrounded by green fields which are home to numerous farmssteads dating all the way back to pre-settlement times; all these years ago there was barely any housing available aside from shacks built on lots rented out by farmers for $1/month or less! Greeneville is a small town in Robertson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The town has been settled by Scots-Irish and English colonists since the early 18th century. Greeneville was incorporated as a village in 1907. In 1951, it became a city. The town was founded by Presbyterian missionaries in 1795 as an agricultural community on the banks of the Mississippi River east of what is now Memphis. The first settler, Alexander McNealy, arrived in 1796 and built a log cabin near what is now Main Street. By 1800, Greeneville had become an important trading post on the river due to its location at one of several crossing points for goods moving between Nashville and St Louis (then called New Orleans). In 1802, Greeneville became home to John Sevier's academy which educated young Scots-Irish and English settlers who would later form the backbone of Memphis' British population. Sevier also donated land to make room for his school on which today's University Park stands. In 1809–10, General Andrew Jackson led an army through Robertson County during his march from Nashville to Vandalia to suppress antifederalist violence across Tennessee; he passed through Greeneville on his way northward. After Jackson's victory over Richard Migozzi at Battle Horseshoe Bend in October that year, many Scots-Irish fled into Arkansas Territory before finally reaching their new homes in central Tennessee around 1830 under Ulysses S Grant’s Reconstruction policies following the American Civil War. A number of families returned after Reconstruction but others continued to live here until well into the 20th century when most residents left for other parts of Tennessee or America due to lack of opportunities or opportunity within their own communities hereabouts while others simply abandoned this once thriving village completely due primarily to changing demographics with numerous farms being purchased by more recent arrivals from other states during that time period culminating with mass migration out west during World War II bringing even more change albeit not necessarily good news for those residents who found themselves adrift amidst all this activity only marginally better off than when they arrived years earlier
