Greeneville is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,493 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Knox County. Greeneville was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1796 and named for General John Green who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1814. Greeneville has been a city since 1907. The town began as a simple agricultural outpost on the banks of the Cumberland River near present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1796, Scottish-Irish pioneers arrived in what is now Greeneville and founded the village of Easton on land that they had acquired from Native Americans. Easton grew rapidly and by 1800 had a school and two stores. By 1814, when Nashville became an incorporated city, Greeneville had become one of its most important commercial centers because it lay across three major transportation routes: Interstate 35 through Nashville to Memphis (via Chattanooga), Interstate 40 through Bowling Green to Chattanooga (via Folkestone), and US Highway 49 south to Jackson (via western Kentucky). In 1907, during Reconstruction years following the end of slavery in America, Knox County's white residents voted overwhelmingly within their own racial category to join metropolitan Nashville as an independent city known as "New Knoxville". This event helped solidify Knox County's status as an Anglo majority county seat while opening up new opportunities for Black citizens who were barred from certain areas of downtown Nashville or from owning property outside urban neighborhoods. Today's largely African American community anchors much of eastern side of town between Patton Avenue eastward and Second Street northward which runs along riverbank bluffs overlooking Downtown Nashville; this area used to be referred to as "the black belt."
