Greeneville, Tennessee is a city in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The city is named after General Andrew Jackson, who Battle of New Orleans and other military engagements occurred in its vicinity. Greeneville was founded on November 3, 1868 by John Gentry and others as the villages of Bellefontaine and Edwardsville. The name "Bellefontaine" honors General James K. Polk's mother-in-law Belle Fontaine who died in 1837 while serving as a colonel in the Mexican–American War. The first home built in Greeneville was built by John Gentry on North Main Street near present day Broadway Avenue on November 3, 1868. Greeneville grew rapidly from its incorporation until it reached its peak during World War II when it had an estimated population of 20,000 people living within a radius of 10 miles (16 km). After the war ended however, many residents moved to cities or other large towns due to economic conditions caused by demobilization and industrial decline throughout the area during the postwar years. Greeneville experienced significant growth again during the 1990s due to digital technology which has led to more jobs such as information technology and software development services; however recent trends have indicated that this type of job growth will not continue indefinitely given new technological advancements which are often resistant to change
