Greeneville, Tennessee is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,502 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville-Davidson metropolitan area. Greeneville was founded in 1855 by Colonel John Sevier and General James H. Johnston as a post office on the Cumberland River. In 1892 it became the county seat of Davidson County. The current name was given to the community by Dr. John Witherspoon after he inspected it during a visit to Tennessee in 1892. The first settler in what is now Greeneville were Andrew Jackson and his family who arrived in 1796 from Virginia and made their home near present-day Greeneville on the banks of Scioto River. They were followed two years later by George Rogers Clark's group including his wife Martha (née Randolph). After purchasing land from some indigenous people known as the Chickasaw Nation, they started farming what is now northeastern Greene County in 1798 under contract with David Robertson and developed a system of irrigation canals which helped them become one of America's leading cotton growers by 1840. In 1830 Greeneville had 1 store, 10 homes, 10 slaves, 2 horses, 4 wagons and $50 worth of goods when it lost its independence to Williamson County because that county had been created from parts of Knoxville Township west of downtown Knoxville following an act passed by the General Assembly on December 12th 1830 (the third such actgranted within three months). Because Williamson County lacked courtrooms or jail cells at that time there wasn't much pointwise difference between how things worked between these two counties other than that Williamson's residents voted for "Governor" while Greeneville citizens did not have this right until 1861 when slavery was abolished throughout all Tennessee except for West Virginia due to US Supreme Court rulings . As part of this process new towns were formed all aroundKnoxville becoming more important service centers for local farmers which led to increased trade among these communities creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs like Dr wives Sarah Sanders Cooke (Catherine) & Dr John Sevier who opened a general store called Sanders & Sevier early 1800s making him one of America’s earliest successful small businessmen
