After the war ended in 1865, many Confederate veterans returned home and began to build homes in Greeneville while others continued to operate businesses such as grocery stores and textile mills which continued until the early 1900s when they were displaced by new industrial developments around Chattanooga. During World War II, Greeneville served as an airfield for military activities throughout much of southern Tennessee including nearby Chattanooga where more than 3 million gallons (11 million liters) of gasoline were pumped from local wells into Bomber Command's B-17 Flying Fortress factories just prior to Pearl Harbor; Test Pilot School 2; numerous Army Air Forces training airfields throughout central America; combat missions over Europe with Tuskegee Airmen (Eighth Air Force); Korean War service flying North Korean MiG Alley aircraft; In 1951, Redevelopment Act designated portions of Knox County including parts of today's downtown Greensville as Specialty Community Development District No 1 with responsibility for providing affordable housing opportunities within walking distance of various retail districts serving citizens within commuting distances thereof -thus beginning what has become one continuous process culminating with final approval for physical development/housing demolition plans for most all unincorporated areas annexed by City limits less than two miles from present day Downtown Greensville boundaries -Financing being provided through both public & private sources thru eminent domain proceedings if deemed necessary due thereto

Thanks to its location on I-65 and its growth as a manufacturing center during World War II (the town produced more munitions than any other city in America), Greeneville has become one of the most established agricultural communities in Appalachia
