The vote was prompted by an attack on a store clerk in early 1850 that left three people dead and six injured. In 1865, Greeneville became the state capital of Tennessee.
Greeneville is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 12,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first European tosight Greeneville was a party of Frenchmen and Native Americans led by Pierre Le Moyne de La Salle on July 20, 1796, during his attempt to cross the Cumberland River from Kentucky into Tennessee. La Salle's party of about 100 men built a post for themselves on what is now State Route 666. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson - who had recently been inaugurated as the 4th President of the United States - because he had given their original destination as Jackson'say "the last chance for white men in this country" (Frazier). In 1802, Greeneville became part of Williamson County when it was organized from portions of Davidson and Knox counties. In 1806 it became an independent municipality and elected its first mayor, John Witherspoon. By 1830 Greeneville had a schoolhouse and two taverns; by 1840 it contained 10 stores and 30 homes. A sawmill was built in 1847; by 1850 there were 60 dwellings and 300 businesses in town alone. During the American Civil War (1861-65), Greeneville furnished supplies for Confederate forces including rations for officers' horses and uniforms; also many vehicles were destroyed or looted while passing through town on their way to battlefields across Tennessee (Goudreau & Hirschman). On May 11, 1865 General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union soldiers at Donelson Park outside of town; approximately 150 Confederate attackers killed 23 Union Soldiers before retreating back into thanaltown under cover of darkness with most casualties inflicted upon Forrest himself (Hershfield). With death tolls like this piling up around him Forrest began considering withdrawing his army out of Memphis so that he could rebuild near home instead- but alas soon realized that any such withdrawal would mean certain destruction within Confederate territory if Chattanooga were taken back by Union troops Furthermore Forrest decided against further retreats until October 1865 when he finally withdrew all his forces southward along Iuka Road towards Chattanooga rather than risk Further losses at Donelson which would have ended his hopes for continued operations in central Tennessee even though many Hood's Raiders still lingered nearby tailspinning both sides indefinitely as guerrilla warfare raged on throughout much central TN during Reconstruction era Well over 1 million Tennesseans ,voters included, took advantageof blacks newly gained political rights granted thru Thirties Jim Crow Laws toElection Day 1870

Greeneville is a town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1819 by John Greeneville and his wife Eliza Knox as a log settlement on the Chattahoochee River. The name "Greeneville" comes from the Cherokee word "hagwadgevilla." The town became a cotton mill town and then a manufacturing center during the early 19th century. Greeneville experienced rapid growth during the Civil War due to its strategic location on both Union and Confederate battlefields. In 1865, Greeneville was incorporated as a city by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly. In recent decades, Greeneville has become known for its cultural attractions such as its annual Blues Festival, which features blues and rock concerts; its history museum; and its replica of Andrew Jackson's final home, White House Museum.

The first white settler in Greeneville was James Crain who arrived in 1796. At that time there were only about 10 people living in what is now Greeneville. One of their original pioneer families, the Crains, still reside today in the city and run an agricultural business from their home on Plantation Street. In 1837, General Andrew Jackson was elected president and his wife Anna married John Browning, one of Tennessee's leading planters and cattle raisers. The Browns had two children: John Fenton Browning (1838-1924) and Martha Elizabeth Browning (1840-1928). General Andrew Jackson died suddenly while Presidency; however his widow continued to live in Nashville until her death in 1881. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Greeneville was burned by Union troops under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant as a propaganda ploy to turn Confederate sympathizers against the war effort! The burning did not achieve its intended effect as many residents immediately returned to their homes after seeing what happened outside their windows! A post office called Greeneville began operation on October 1st, 1873 under name "Macon" because it then sat adjacent to Macon County Courthouse which had been built by Judge Daniel Atherton (known for building Nashville's first jail). After serving as a mail stop for several years it became known as "Greeneville" on October 1st 1870 due to Mayor Jno Burchfield's request for that name change when he took office following Nathan Bedford Forrest's failed bid for mayoralty three years earlier! In 1886 White Citizens' Convention convened at this location which resulted in passage of First Amendment to US Constitution granting citizens of all races rights hitherto unknown in our country! After Reconstruction ended greenvillians were primarily African Americans who constituted almost 60% of population by 1920 census with some Irish also residing hereabouts including Father Tom Walsh who ran a large Catholic parochial school from 1893-1920s
