In 1865, when Confederate General John Custer came through Greeneville on his way to fight against Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Harpers Ferry, he stopped at the Gunnison Hotel to drink coffee while being entertained by locals. One of the hotel's employees named George Armstrong ran into the room where Custer was sitting and handed him a pistol with which he shot three times before dying. This event is considered to be one of the earliest examples of Pistol shooting in America.
Greeneville, Tennessee is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greeneville has been inhabited by humans since pre-historic times. The first white people to live in Greeneville were Revolutionary War soldiers and their families who founded the town on land granted them by General James Wilkinson in 1796. Greeneville was named after Colonel John Green of the British army who helped defeat Cherokee warriors during the American Revolution. The local post office began operations on December 12, 1814, under the name "Newbern". On July 8, 1836, it was renamed "Greeneville" in honor of President Andrew Johnson's daughter Lady Bird Johnson. The community had a population of just over 100 when it incorporated as a municipal corporation on March 15, 1907. In 1916 Clay Allison built what became known as Allison’s Ford which still stands today and provides service to both residents and visitors alike for groceries and gasoline; Allison also ran a grocery store from his home until his death in 1978. In 1957 he donated land for what would become Midtown Center shopping mall which now employs more than 1,000 people across five levels including an outdoor movie theater and several restaurants/ bars/. In 2006 Mayor Jeremy Yarborough dedicated Midtown Center as Tennessee’s first green infrastructure achievement designation for businesses that areWMATA compliant with rainwater harvesting systems or lower water demand irrigation systems based on consideration of site specific needs such as energy efficiency or public health benefits Today Greeneville remains an active center for commerce with its Main Street full of independent shops plus two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company and Citizens Bank), four ExxonMobil convenience stores (ExxonMobil Store #1 closed in 2009), three KFC restaurants (KFC Store #2 closed in 2009) along with six other large retailers including Sears Holdings Corporation., JCPenney Inc., Macy’s Inc., Sears Canada Ltd., Lowe’s Home & Hardware Stores Incorporated., Bedrock Energy Services LLC., Dillard’s Department Stores Incorporated.). There are also numerous small business owners operating out of their homes or apartments along Main Street alone Some prominent businesses located here include: CVS Pharmacy (owned by Walmart ), First Aid Supply Co.(owned by Costco ), Kroger Supermarkets (),believe Clinic ()and many more! According to the 2000 census there were only 1,452 residents living within city limits while 3% lived outside city limits making it one of America's most suburban areas . However according to 2011 census estimate there are now 498 residents living within city limits while 3% live outside city limits making it again one of America's most suburban areas

The White family sold their land toeming citizens for $1 an acre in 1920. The first church built in Greeneville was Trinity Lutheran Church which burned down in 1904. According to the Tennessee Historical Society, Greeneville was founded in 1819 as a small town on the Cumberland River. The area that is now Greeneville was part of the Cherokee Nation until 1830 when it became part of Alabama. In 1847, Greeneville became an incorporated city and soon developed into a major center for cotton production in the region. Throughout its history, Greeneville has been home to many notable people, including Confederate general Robert E. Lee and author Maycomb County resident J.D. Salinger.
