Greeneville is a small town in Middle Tennessee, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville-Davidson metropolitan area. Greeneville is one of the oldest towns in Middle Tennessee and was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1785 at what is now known as First Baptist Church. The original name for Greeneville was "Allegany". The first white settler in Greeneville Township, James Hargrave, arrived in 1787. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson passed through Greeneville on his way to battle against Native Americans near Lookout Mountain and made an impromptu stop here to rest before continuing his journey southward. The town started off as a small farming community with just a handful of homes and landowner John Crouch developed it into a small city with over 100 buildings by 1830. Greeneville, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville-Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Greeneville were Spanish missionaries in 1795. The area that makes up today's Greeneville was originally part of the Cherokee Nation and it was where wagon trains stopped on their way to Oklahoma during the 1820s. In 1824, General Alexander Harnett founded the community of Antioch on the Cumberland River near what is now downtown Greeneville. A post office called Antioch had been established in 1825, but it was discontinued in 1828 because there were no subscribers. In 1830–31, Captain John Smith built a cabin on what is now Beaver Dam Road and named it Greeneville after his aunt’s home in Scotland (now known as its original location). He returned to America and reported about his findings in an article he published entitled "A Narrative of visited Places." In December 1830 he sent letters from his cabin - which are still preserved - containing drawings and sketches of several Scottish whisky distilleries which he had toured while staying with friends at Hermitage Creek Inn outside Knoxville. In 1832 General Nathan Bedford Forrest led Confederate forces against Union forces at First Battle of Bull Run and within weeks most of central Alabama had fallen into slavery due to Forrest's orders involving strategic burned crops as part of an overall strategy to starve Southern armies into submission. East Tennessee saw some harsh hand-to-hand combat between Union troops under Major General Hugh Custer and Confederate cavalry under General Robert Ewing before Confederate reinforcements arrived en route from Georgia with orders to protect Mobile Bay; this battle became known as Second Battle Of Bull Run or simply "Bull Run". Forrest took advantage of this lull by moving southward through eastern Tennessee towards Chattanooga where he hoped to reach Rebel lines protectingullah Mountain aka Missionary Ridge; however instead mainly skirmishes followed until late May when Federal forces finally withdrew eastward across Tellico Plains towards Nashville proper becomingickshippingthe Confederates back into states' rights for good measure reasons unknown today despite claims by some historians that Yankee general Sherman ordered them out because he wanted Butler (a fellow member of Sherman's staff) move north against Grant's army pushing north along Iuka River valleyossier into defeat at Chickamauga National Historical Park shortly thereafter; "On July 9th 1865 Johnson's division set out for Chattanooga only for mephitic weather conditions so severe they closed off all communication between army divisions causing perforated hats and immersion bottles being thrown from artillery like ping pong balls onto Fifth Corps Parade ground giving us field operations status until relieved by Ninth Corps infantry three days later."
