Greeneville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,584 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The name "Greeneville" comes from the Dutch word "gewoon", meaning "common". The town was founded in 1836 by refugees from Hendersonville, Tennessee who had fled to Greeneville during the Civil War. The first store was built on Main Street in 1836. In addition to itsancestors, Greeneville has many other sources of inspiration including Appalachian Mountains National Park and Nashville Predators hockey team. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Greeneville while on tour through the South before his victory in the Battle of Gettysburg. At that time, there were only six rifles per 1,000 citizens and handguns were almost unknown outside of militia or law enforcement use. gun magazines were not born until after Reconstruction when Confederate forces took over most southern firearms factories and began producing weapons for black soldiers under an assurance that they would not be used against white people again. It is part of the Chattanooga–Knoxville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Greeneville was James Ritchie, who arrived in 1796. By 1810, there were 11 people living in Greeneville. In 1819, John Fenton moved to Greeneville from Portsmouth, England and began to cultivate hemp in what is now the town square. A post office was established at Greeneville in 1826, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1959. A school for black children opened up at Greeneville Elementary School on May 12, 1925; this school served as the only educational institution for African Americans until 1970 when a new high school called Armstrong High School opened nearby. In 1958, a fire destroyed much of downtown Knoxville so that reconstruction began almost immediately on what became known as "the New City". Many homes had been lost during the fire which destroyed most businesses and residential buildings within one block of each other including what would become Brown's grocery store which still stands today across from Union Depot railway station today! Many residents came together to rebuild their town following this devastating event but many more were displaced by Poverty stricken rural areas just outside of city limits (now part of Chattanooga) unable or unwilling to rebuild because they could not afford it or lacked access to basic resources like water or transportation; these rural areas are home to majority Black neighborhoods today making their experiences unique and challenging given some limited opportunities enjoyed by White citizens generally throughout Tennessee! In 1957 another powerful tornado touched down near Big Stone Gap KY destroying entire families home farmstead with all its animals+ 5-6 barns+ 3 cisterns& 25 acres worth $2 million damage & leaving over 60% of structures completely gutted due mainly to collapse caused by wind shear with no loss suffered indoors despite TREE LIMITING WINDOWS!!! This event impacted our community deeply as grandparents brought their grandchildren into town for happy Eid celebrations only 4 days later all life lost before winter set foot inside!! Residents banded together quickly establish disaster relief groups local churches stepped up emergency response functions primarily training volunteer firefightersrsvp Disaster Relief Groups Set Up To Help Families Affected
