Greeneville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,507 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River and is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first white people to live in Greeneville were James Robertson and his family who came from Scotland in 1792. They married Anna Caldwell, daughter of Tryon Caldwell and Nuptial Agreement No. 3 between Tryon Caldwell and Anna Robertson (dated 8/2/1792). James Robertson's parents had emigrated from Irvine, Scotland in 1768. Greeneville was platted as a village on January 11, 1819 by commissioners John Tipton and Lewis Richardson under the name "Newburgh." Under its new name it became the county seat of Williamson County on December 14, 1836 after being selected by commissioners Daniel Boone and Isaac Shelby from an offer made by Andrew Jackson. On July 10, 1840 Greenevile had a population of 704 residents when it was given to Anderson County pursuant to Tennessee Act No. 141 which granted land eastward extending into Williamson County to be developed for agriculture.. In March 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Knoxville before invading Tennessee along with other armies including General Beauregard's army overran most of y'all about April 27-29 61st Regiment Pte A W Ellis Chattanooga Volunteers served under Col J F Gregg Chatham Vols 4th Tenn Infantry during Battle Of Missionary Ridge There were several skirmishes fought around this time but little action took place until early 1865 when Union troops moved upriver from Corinth through Kentucky entered Knoxville arriving just prior t0 battle around May 2nd where they overran our forces retreating back across riverMay 5th 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Greeneville with an estimated 10k men coming downriver followed rapidly by Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant

The town quickly became known for its agricultural products, such as cotton and tobacco, and its location near rivers made it an important port for shipping goods to both Chattanooga and Knoxville. The development of industry in Greeneville during the late 19th century helped contribute to its decline during the 20th century. However, recent growth in the town has reinstated it as a major center for trade and commerce in Tn.

Greeneville grew rapidly in the days of frontier trade and development, and by 1820 it had become an important cultural center. In 1827, Greeneville became the seat of government for Davidson County, Tennessee. during this time, it also saw rapid growth in population and commerce. In 1850, Greeneville became the capital of Tennessee after Nashville was destroyed by Union forces during the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Greeneville lost much of its importance as a commercial center but continued to grow until it reached its peak around 1920.
