Goodlettsville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is located on the Cumberland River and is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. It was named for General James H. Goodlett, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a U.S. Representative from Tennessee from 1853 to 1861. The first settlers in what is now Goodlettsville were farmers and their families who arrived in 1819 from Virginia. They built log homes on a small plot of land that they called "the swamp." By 1830, some of these settlers had moved to more permanent homes near the riverbank where they developed a industry that included manufacturing goods such as saddles, shoes, cotton fabrications, food products and building materials such as dams and levees. As good times began to improve for many people throughout Kentucky andTennessee during the 1830s-1840s (due largely to increasing crop yields caused by new irrigation techniques), interest among some people in moving westward increased; accordingly, several groups made plans to move westward over winter into what would become Davidson County in 1851 when it was organized out of parts of Knox County (including present-day Goodlettsville). One group led by Andrew Johnson set out on December 11th, 1851 with 10 men including his brother John Alexander Johnson; however nightfall found them stranded onshore at Muddy Fork while trying to cross over because ice formed along both forks due to recent rains. Aided by passing boats which had stopped nearby for dinner that night, they managed to get back across without incident the next day thanks mostly to help received from friendly Indians living along the banks of the Cumberland River south of hereabouts... In 1860 Goodlettville became one of 15 towns within five miles (16 km) of Nashville being annexed into that city's boundaries following its incorporation as an incorporated municipality under state law.. In 1870 this measure was repealed by orderof Governor Donelson after protests from citizens concerned about possible loss of social services should their town become too closely associated with larger Nashvilleites... In 1880 another annexation attempt failed when resistance against taking much smaller towns failed to materialize... When Nashville annexing other portions of Davidson County outside our town limits resulting in all but two members (John Witherspoon & Samuel Morse) votingagainst incorporation we did so knowing full well goodlat tsville would remain independent until abolished by orderof governor donelson
