The Goodlettsville Rifle and Pistol Club was chartered in 1892. It is one of the oldest rifle clubs in the United States. The club has been meeting monthly since 1896, when it was called the “Goodlettsville Rifle and Pistol Club.” In 1899, the club changed its name to the “Goodlettsville Rifle and Pistol Club with Horseshoe Drive” because there were no longer any trees near Elkhorn Lane that could be used for target shooting. In 1908, the club changed its name again to the “Goodlettsville Rifle and Pistol Club-East Tennessee Section” because it had become apparent that there were two sections in Goodlettsville-the north section which was centered around Elm Street between Second Avenue and Fourth Street, and the south section which was located east of Elm Street between Third Avenue and Fifth Streets. The east section had more participants than the west section so a decision was made to rename it once again to the Goodlettsville Rifle & Pistol Club on May 10th, 1912 due to all of our members being from that part of town. In 1916, our club moved from our original location on Eastside Road adjacent to Knox College into a new building which we donated on Blue Ridge Parkway just outside of Nashville. We held our first annual banquet at this new location on November 8th, 1916. At that banquet we adopted a resolution stating that every rifle or pistol shot should be nullified if fired over or through an effective hearing protector while attending any game or event where alcohol may be present. Unfortunately during World War I many people decided not to take this pledge as they needed their guns for service instead of using hearing protectors at events such as football games or dances. However after World War I ended we regained our pledge to use hearing protectors at all future events regardless of whether alcohol was present however things continued to go bad for us until 1970 when we finally solved our problem by moving back into our original building on Eastside Road adjacent to Knox College again! Since then many things have changed within Goodlettsville including but not limited to; births (both natural and artificial), divorces (both real and legal), moves (both inside and outside of Tennessee), acquisitions (both business/property/assets) etc., but one thing has stayed constant; good old fashion rifle & pistol shooting meets each month at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish Hall downtown!

Goodlettsville is a small town located in East Tennessee, about 20 miles east of the Cumberland Mountains. The town was founded by James Goodlett in 1814, and it became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1968. Goodlettsville is named after James Goodlett’s father, who also lived there. The first settler in Goodlettsville was James Goodlett Jr., who moved to the area in 1814. The town was started as a post office and store on the grounds of what is now the Old High School building. In 1828, John Fenton built a wagon shop and barn west of the original Post Office Building. By 1830, the population of Goodlettsville had reached 100 residents. In 1838, Isaac Winchester donated land for a school at what is now Riverbend Elementary School. The school opened in 1840 and served grades K-8 until 1954. It was then moved to its current location on West Main Street within the boundaries of Goodlettsville CDP. The first high school in Goodlettsville was built on South Water Street between 1865 and 1870 by Mr. & Mrs. Hargrave; it closed in 1916 due to lack of enrollment. In 1923, King’s Chapel Academy opened as a boarding school for girls; it closed after two years in 1925 due to budget cuts by Governor John Sevier IV.).
