In 1865, the town acquired its present name from General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who named it after his father-in-law, James Goodlett Sr., a Union general killed at Bull Run during the American Civil War. Goodlettsville experienced significant growth during Reconstruction following the end of the American Civil War. In 1872, it acquired a cotton gin and began manufacturing cotton goods for local markets. By 1879, Goodlettstown had become one of the most important towns in Hardin County In 1896, Goodlettstown became an incorporated village with a population of just over 100 people In 1935, Goodlettvsille merged with Knoxvillette to form what is now known as Knoxvillette-Goodlettstown Incorporation LLC

Goodlettsville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is one of the most significant localities in Davidson County and has a long history as a center for agricultural production and commerce. As a result of its location on the Cumberland River, Goodlettsville has been known for its fertile soil and according to some sources, it was home to the world's first cotton gin. The early residents of Goodlettsville were farmers who started growing crops there in 1819. By 1825, many of these farmers had moved to Nashville to become merchants and railroad entrepreneurs. Between 1827 and 1830, Goodlettsville became known as "the Cotton Capital of the World." In 1830, Elijah Muhammad founded his own religious movement called Islam in Goodlettstown Township. This event helped launch what would eventually be called African American conservatism within Christianity. Goodlettstown also played an important role during Reconstruction in southernTennessee. After Confederate soldiers burned down churches and homes throughout the region during the war years, many white people relocated to Nashville in search of new opportunities after slavery was abolished across America. Some of these new arrivals settled in Goodlettstown and began businesses such as grocery stores and cotton plantations. These settlers helped revive agriculture in Goodlettstown through their purchases of land and their development of crop rotation systems that permitted them to sell their products locally rather than purchase goods from other towns near by or over seas. In recent years, Goodlettstown's economy has shifted more towards tourism due to its proximity to Gatlinburg National Park and its easy access to Interstate 20 corridor which provides access both northward into Tennessee (to Knoxvillle) as well as southward into Kentucky (to Bowling Green). Additionally, good job opportunities have arisen due to changes within Tennessee’s technology industry which have led companies such as Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Amazon Web Services Inc., Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., Intel Corporation among others locating research universities such as Vanderbilt University nearby while still allowing easy access outside Memphis for students attending those schools’ medical marijuana dispensaries generating up $2 million per year worth jobs statewide!
