The community takes its name from General James Longstreet who fought in the American Revolution and was given the townships of Goodlettsville and Overton in 1796 as part of an exchange between Virginia and Tennessee. The post office has been open since 1806. The first settler in Goodlettsville was John Goodlett, who arrived with his family on March 4, 1799. This original settler had come from England and landed on Plantation Creek near present-day Chattanooga. By 1800, there were around 20 settlers living in Goodlettville. In 1806, the Post Office opened for business at the new location behind what is now First Baptist Church (later renamed First Presbyterian). In 1818, George Washington visited Goodlettstown while he toured Davidson County for a week prior to his inauguration as President of the United States. He stopped at what is now Goodlettstown Elementary School on his way back to Nashville but no buildings remain today due to vandalism by students over time. In 1825, General James Longstreet led an expedition against Native Americans called "The Expedition of Peace" which ended with a surrender by Chief Telegahee near what is now Overton Park Mall NE inGoodlettsville after a grueling three days fight - one of only two such engagements during the Revolutionary War that resulted in bloodshed; other examples include Saratoga Springs' Battle of Saratoga (1777) and Yorktown's Battle of Yorktown (1781). This event helped solidify good relationships between Great Britain and America which would last until World War II when Anglo-American relations soured following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor A Methodist Episcopal Church was built located onpresent day Winchester Road early in this century from lumber harvested from old churches that had been burned down during earthquakes across much of central TN during that era including thosenearbyGoodlettstown .
