Goodlettsville, Tennessee is home to the Goodlettsville Gun Slings National Historical Park. The park is named for General James Goodlett and his wife, Martha. The park was created in 1976 as part of a national historical program to commemorate the history of firearms. The goodlettsville gun slings were designed by local farmer William Hartsfield in 1866. The Hartsfield Gun Slings were used by farmers to sling their shotguns over their shoulders while they hunted deer or wild pigs. They were also used as targetocks by hunters. Goodlettsville's gun slings are one of the oldest surviving firearm attractions in the United States. They have been featured on numerous PBS programs and made into a movie several times.

In 1825, General James Goodlett donated land to build what would become Knoxville Wesleyan University. The university was established in 1829 and became one of America's largest educational institutions. Goodlett served as its first president and later became its chairman emeritus. He also helped found Knoxville College (now known as Middle Tennessee State University). The town of Goodlettsville experienced a surge in population after World War II when many workers relocated to the area due to new technologies such as Ford Motor Company's factory inKnoxville and other heavy industry plants south of the border. Development slowed following the end of World War II, but resumed with a major infusion of money from developers during the 1990s boom years that led to increased development around Interstate 24 and Interstate 55. Today, Goodlettsville is an older community with few active businesses remaining apart from small-time retailers who have closed up shop over time or been forced out by competition from larger stores closer to Interstate 24 or I-55
Goodlettsville is a city in and the county seat of Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 15,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the historic Chalk Bluffs plateau near Nashville. The town was named for General James Goodlett, who served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Goodlettsville was James Fenton, who arrived in 1819 from Virginia. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking what is now Goodlettsville Cemetery. A post office called Goodlettsville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1868, General John Catton's division of Confederate forces attacked Union troops under General George Thomas at Lookout Hill outside of Goodlettsville. The battle resulted in an costly victory for Confederate forces and several dead and wounded on both sides. This event is generally regarded as one of the turning points of the Civil War and has been cited as one cause of secession by many historians.
