The Goodlettsville Rifle Association was organized in 1902. The rifle association is the oldest gun club in Goodlettsville, Tennessee and has been meeting since 1892. The purpose of the rifle association is to promote shooting for fun and education, to protect the rights of gun owners, and to help keep firearms accessible to those who need them. In addition, the Goodlettsville Rifle Association provides a facility for members to shoot at various ranges across the city. The first rifles were brought into Goodlettsville by a man named John Goodlett in 1892. He purchased some land in Goodlettsville and began building a rifle range on it. The first target rifle competition took place at this range on November 14th, 1892. It was won by James Hatton of Memphis with a score of 95 points out of 100. This event marked the beginning of good ol' fashion shooting contests where people from all walks of life participated. Today these types of competitions are still held annually at this range with everyone from children to seniors coming together to have some good time! In 1906, Driscoll donated his land within walking distance of the current location for use as a parkland for the citizens and businesses in town. This area now known as Middle Park became home to many small pistol matches that used to take place there between 1903-1906 which attracted many shooters from throughout central Tennessee including Johnnie Lee Higgins (1907-1989), Joe Gibbs (1893-1970), Amos Keyes (1886-1964) and others! These matches helped promote handgun hunting as well as provide opportunity for people who couldn’t afford or couldn’t find rifles/ shotguns to participate too! In 1914, an amendment was made to local law that allowed Gunslingers Protective Association (GPA) membership which gave individuals who owned handguns automatic registration without havingto go through any formality! NRA member status allowed anyone over 21 years old with an identification card or driver’s license containing their name and photograph ever owning one or more guns “in keeping with their lawful activities as sportsmen” ! This not only opened up new opportunities forgun owners but also created much excitement amongst potential shotgunners! At this time shotguns were not considered pistols so NRA member status did nothing for these folks…they had TO OWN A GUN TO BE A GUNSLINGER PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION MEMBER!!!!!!!!! Needless To say, there wasn't much enthusiasm among these folks about getting their hands on another weapon just because someone else had given them an easy access card!!! hahaha…we get it now 😉 In 1934 Gaylord Nelson donated 4 acres next door known as Old Green Oaks which became home once again unto numerous small pistol matches taking place there until 1978 when they moved indoors due lack thereof being available on site anymore 😉 These events helped create something called "Tennessee Pistol Championship" which currently takes place every year at this location bringing in many participants from all overcentral TN!! haven't seen that one in awhile 🙂 Today we continue what our forefathers started here back 92 years ago – promoting shooting & education through firearm ownership
