Goodlettsville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,686 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun safe made in Goodlettsville was built by S. H. Goodloe in 1885 and it still stands today within the town limits of Goodlettsville. Goodloe was one of the first people to patented a gun safe and he named his invention the "Goodloe Gun Safe". He also built other types of safes such as an underground safe and a self-guiding Albanian key type safety lock for shotguns that were used by farmers and hunters throughout the south during Prohibition years. The first general store was built here in 1865 by Hiram Goodlett Sr., father of Colonel John Goodlett, Sr.. In 1916, General Electric began manufacturing radios and TVs here at its plant which continued until 1997 when it moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Today, Goodlettsville remains a small town with no shopping malls or other large commercial interests; instead, it relies mainly on agriculture for its economy which includes raising chickens, pigs, cattle and crops such as cotton and wheat. Goodlettsville is a small town located in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is named after General George Washington Goodlett and his family. The community began as a small log cabin settlement on the banks of the Great Smoky Mountains River in 1824. In 1831, Goodlett's father-in-law, Andrew Jackson Goodlett founded an agricultural colony called "Alcoa" near present day Knoxville. When Andrew Jackson died in 1838, his son George Washington Goodlett took over management of Alcoa and moved the colony to what is now Goodlettsville. Goodlettsville experienced significant growth during the early years of its history. It became a stop on the stagecoach route from Knoxville to Nashville and soon developed into a full-fledged town with its own school system and churches. By 1860, GoodlettsVILLE had more than 5500 residents and it continued to grow until 1910 when it reached its current size. Today, goodletonville remains one of America's most vibrant small towns with strong traditions that have helped make it an important part of local culture and economy
Goodlettsville was founded in 1819 by Major General James Goodletts. It became a town in 1827, and was named for General Goodletts' father, Levi Goodletts. The town had a population of 1,500 in 1830. In 1865, Goodlett's Mansion was built as the first seat of government for the new county of Davidson County. The mansion is now a museum.
