Goodlettsville is a small town in Henderson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun protection history in Goodlettsville can be traced back to 1892 when a group of people formed the Goodlettsville Rifle Club to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and other unknown individuals. The club soon became an importantstay in Goodlettsville and continued to exist until 1954 when it disbanded due to changing social mores. Since then, there have been several attempts by various groups to revive or maintain the Goodlettsville Rifle Club organization- including a reformation in 2006 which failed due to lack of memberships and interest. In 2013, however, there was renewed effort led by local historian Dr. Tonya Laird with the goal of starting a new club that would focus on historical preservation and education about firearms and their use within Goodlettttvile community since 1892. It should be noted that while efforts have been made over time to keep guns out of Handsome Valley’s hands- including through such organizations as the NRA/NRA Heritage Foundation Gun Preservation Program- some resident continue feel that gun violence is not only preventable but also needs attention from elected officials as well as businesses who are profitably benefitting from sales tax dollars generated from gun registration programs like those currently being implemented in goodletttville.

The London, Ontario railroad built a line through Goodlettsville in 1868, and the town began to thrive as a manufacturing center for hats and other items made from wool and other materials shipped from Canada. However, the recession of the mid-2000s led to job losses in Goodletttsville and elsewhere in Johnson County. Goodlettsville was founded in 1796 by Captain Goodlett and his wife, Rachel. The town is named for General James Goodlett, who fought in the American Revolution. Goodlett's family owned a large plantation near Goodlettsville until it was sold in 1833. From then on, the town grew slowly but steadily. In 1907, Goodlett's granddaughter married John Fenton of Chattanooga and the couple began to move into the town. They built a home on North Main Street and opened the first grocery store in Tennessee in 1912. The store continued to be open until it burned down in 1978. In 1925, Goodlett's grandson Donald founded Donelson Paper Company which still operates today as one of the largest paper companies in Tennessee.
