Goodlettsville is named after General James Goodlett, who served as military governor of Kentucky during the American Civil War. Goodlettsville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Goodlettsville is located on the banks of the river Cumberland and east of Interstate 45. The town was founded by eighty-six farmers who came from Virginia in 1814 to purchase land in what is now Hardin County. They named their community after General James Goodlett, an American Revolutionary War general who fought for the British side. The early settlers were farmer John S Chapel and his wife Sarah; lawyer A.B King; Methodist minister Wm H Wilkinson; physician Dr George Stephenson; blacksmith Eli Smith; Surveyor Ebenezer Fenton; and carpenter Israel Prentice were some of the original settlers. In 1835, Goodlettsville became one of thirteen townships formed within Hardin County when parts were taken away from it to form Jackson Township. In 1838, part of Goodletttvsville was annexed by Jackson Township and became known as Knoxville Township due to its proximity to that city. In 1861, Knoxvilles merged with Jackson Township to form Hardin County and GoodletttsVILLE became a part of that county In 1865, during Reconstruction in America following the Civil War, violence occurred in Greeneville over control of cotton mills there by white men working alongside African Americans working as slaves (the so-called "Redemption Papers"). Governor Zebulon B Vance ordered all Confederate military officers present at Fort Sumter surrendered without firing a shot or giving any quarter - this effectively ended all combat in Mississippi until late 1865 when Union forces began attacking southern plantations near Corinth where Confederate soldiers had been posted as guards

Goodlettsville was founded by General James H. Wilson in 1815 as a small settlement on the Cumberland River east of what is now Chattanooga. The town grew rapidly after Wilson's arrival and by 1825 had become an important stop on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad. In 1827, Goodlettsville became the seat of Hardin County when it was created from parts of Union County. The town continued to grow and prosper until the late 19th century, when heavy industry began to supplant agriculture as primary economic activity in Goodlettsville. By 1910, most of present-day Goodlettsville had been destroyed by floods caused by rains that fall during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. However, some structures still remain from that era such as the former courthouse and jail which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places
