The area that now Goodlettsville was once called "Mint Hill" and was located on the eastern edge of what is now McMinn County. In 1811, General Sam Houston discovered saltpeter veins in Goodlettsville Creek and decided to make it his new capital. Goodlettsville became an important center for producing salt during the 1820s and 1830s due to its location at the crossing of two major trade routes. The first post office was established in 1824, and by 1830, all but one block of Goodlettville had been surveyed and built. By 1840, most of what is now Goodlettsville had been built, with only a few buildings remaining unbuilt or undeveloped until after 1861 when a tornado destroyed much of downtown Valley Forge while residents were away on military duty. Following Reconstruction following the Civil War, many businesses moved from Nashville to Goodlettstown because there were no other opportunities open to them within commuting distance; this included Coca-Cola Bottling Company founder John Denny who set up shop in 1886 on Main Street across from Post Office Square (later renamed State Capitol Square). After years of being closed for lunch due to lack of customers or competition from local restaurants such as Applebees (now known as Papa John’s Pizza), Denny reopened his store under new management in 1913 after purchasing land next door from Wabash Railroad president Alonzo Mourning (an early investor in Chattanooga). Over time Denny’s store became one of multiple anchor stores along Main Street near State Capitol Square which also included several small grocery stores before becoming large enough to be served by a bus system starting around 1950 with stops at various locations throughout downtown including inside City Hall before moving out into its current building on First Avenue NE in 2000. Today over 130 businesses line Main Street between State Capitol Square and First Avenue NE including some 20 multi-national corporations as well as numerous art galleries, professional services firms and other business types typical of Downtown Chattanooga today such as banks/credit unions/ law offices/ grocers etc.. Despite having lost almost all their storefront space since late 1990S annexation by neighboring Savannah has not stopped redevelopment - most recently apartment buildings have been erected along Broad Church Road just east of I-10 exit 5A giving good access directly onto Broad Church Road for shoppers - although these buildings will likely soon face pressure from additional development adjacent to I-10 exit 5B which offers limited surface parking
