Goodlettsville is home to the Goodlettsville Armory and Goodlettsville Museum. The National Rifle Association's rifle range is located in Goodlettonsville.

Goodlettsville was founded in 1819 as a small agricultural community named Poston Hill by James Goodlett and his wife Elizabeth. Goodlett built two churches in Goodlettsville and began to sell land for education and industry. In 1847, Goodlett became the first postmaster of Goodlettsville after founding the Post Office Department of Fayette County. In 1865, he donated land to build what would become Vanderbilt University; today it is known as Vanderbilt University Nashville campus. The school has been expanding ever since with new buildings and programs including medical research, business administration, law enforcement and economics. In 1902, following the death of James Goodlett Jr., his widow Elizabeth donated most of her estate to establish Vanderbilt University Library which now houses over 100 million items from all over the world including more than 2 million books and manuscripts. In addition to its library holdings, Vanderbilt also operates several museums including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum (now part of New York City) and Villa Leonore which contains one of history's largest collection of Renaissance art from Italy

The first store in Goodlettsville closed in 1902, but the town continued to grow until it had 2,000 residents by 1920. After World War II, Goodlettsville experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to military bases and manufacturing plants along Interstate 40. By 2000, the population had increased to over 5,000 and goodletsville has since declined somewhat since then due to various economic factors such as loss of jobs in those industries and suburbanization of the town center. Despite this decline though, some aspects of Goodlettvsville culture remain strong including its close identification with football (the town's only professional team) and its traditions of Bluegrass music and arts festivals.
Goodlettsville was founded in 1817 by John Goodlett and his family. The community grew rapidly due to the production of cotton, corn, flour and other goods that were exported to the markets of Europe. In 1861, Goodlett's son-in-law, James Buchanan Goodlett, became Tennessee's first U.S. Senator from Nashville. Goodlett's legacy is also well known for his donation of land to establish the University of Tennessee in 1876.
