Goodlettsville is a small town in the U.S. state of Tennessee, located about 15 miles southeast of Nashville on I-10. The population was 3,857 at the 2010 census. The name "Goodlettsville" is derived from the English word "Godfrey," meaning "a good man." Goodlettsville was founded in 1818 by General Andrew Goodloe and his family, who came overland from Virginia to settle in what is now Middle Tennessee. The original village consisted of a log cabin and three or four families. In 1830, Goodloe laid out a new townsite on land that he had purchased from John Sevier. He named it Goodlettstown after his eldest son Godfrey (or Goffe). In 1836, General James Kincaid destroyed part of Sevier's plantation in what is now Goodlettstown while invading North Carolina and captured many slaves as he went along. When he returns home, he orders his brother William to burn all the plantations down in Tennessee so that they could not be used again for slave labor. This event is known as the outbreak of the Civil War. After marrying Anna Waterman (née Wood), James Kincaid moves to Goodlettstown with his family and begins construction on White House Plantation which eventually becomes Knox County Courthouse complex today's Goodlettsville Historic District downtown area which also includes several buildings built by Kincaid including White House Cottage where President Abraham Lincoln stayed during his visit to Chattanooga in 1865 As an agricultural center during most of its history, Goodlettstown produced mainly corn and cotton; however, recently there has been increased production of vegetables and flowers due to nearby vineyards and agricultural research stations operated by Vanderbilt University According to Forbes Magazine's list of "The 25Most Forged Assets In America", Putnam Guaranty Trust Co., one of Nashville's largest banks became insolvent after investments failed because advances were not made against collateralized debt obligations backed by mortgages taken out by farmers in good times but soon after bad times when prices crashed causing defaults among those same farmers; this led directly to layoffs among Putnam employees who lost their jobs because their guarantees were worthless without money secured against them
