In 1911, the Goodletsville Arsenal was built to produce artillery shells for World War I. The war ended with Japan's victory and the armory closed in 1922. It was founded in 1853 by General James C. Goodlett and his father, Ebenezer Goodlett. In 1861, Goodlett's widow donated land to create the city limits. The original buildings were built on Union Hill between 1868 and 1870s by John Prentice and others who donated their time and money to help develop the town from its agricultural beginnings into a thriving community with commerce, industry and artistry. Goodlettsville became an important center for cotton cultivation during the 19th century as it had access to good irrigation systems and fertile soil. One of the first industries established in Goodlettsville was moving goods brought overland from New Orleans via wagon trains through the Desperately Seeking Cowboys stagecoach route which connected Nashville with Memphis on one side and Hardin County on the other side of Happy Valley Creek where much cotton farming took place until after World War II when transportation improved dramatically making southern Indiana available for eastern Tennessee farmers to sell their product at lower prices due to import substitution effectuated by newly developed transportation methods such as air travel that made it possible for farmers around the world to export their food products at lower prices than ever before becoming popularized by television programs like "The Price Is Right" among others In recent decades Goodlettsville has experienced steady growth as a result of its role as an agricultural production center for nearby Memphis within Shelby County; it now has a population of about 26,000 people who are employed in many different businesses including education, health care, manufacturing and information technology Since 2000 there have been several major redevelopment projects that have taken place in & around Goodlettville including: 1) Vaughn Elementary School - A $40 million project that replaced 9 traditional classrooms with new multimillion-dollar learning spaces that include interactive whiteboards, touch screens and Xboxes for use by students throughout grades K-12 2) Lenox Galleries - A $3 million project that addition two floors of gallery space overlooking Main Street adjacent to Vaughn Elementary School 2) Whitehaven Farms - A $2 million project which provides convenience store/barbecue restaurant services on site along with housing units for displaced residents following Hurricane Katrina 3) Hampton Roads Regional Medical Center - A $69 million project which will provide 675 bed medical facility expanding existing hospital capacity currently used by Vanderbilt University Medical Center; additionally 4 acres surrounding campus will be reservedfor future development creating an urban village type setting similar to downtown Memphis while also providing job training & economic development opportunities

Goodlett named the town after his father-in-law, General George Washington's aide and friend Colonel James Goodlett. The first store in Goodlettsville opened on Main Street in 1832. In 1837, one of Goodlett’s sons settled here and built the first frame house in the town. Goodlettville experienced an agriculture boom from the early 1800s until World War I when it became a manufacturing center for munitions and other war materials. In 1915, Goodlettsville became home to what is now National Military Park #4 which preserves portions of its antebellum architecture including seven contributing buildings dating back to 1792 when Major General James Robertson moved into what is now known as Robertson Hall on Belle Isle (now called Independence Mall). Today there are over 100 businesses located ingoodlettsville including several banks and several shopping malls with more than 10 million square feet of commercial space. During World War II, Goodlettsville played host to numerous military plants such as Pee Dee Rubber Company and Bethlehem Steel Corporation which produced munitions for both Allied and Axis forces during WWII. After the war ended, many factories closed down but some continued operations until they were relocated to new facilities elsewhere within Tennessee or outside the United States altogether. One example of this was Koppers Shoes which remain headquartered inGoodlettsville today with over 1 million square feet of floor space The post-war years were not so good for Goodlett'sVillage though; crime rates soared as offshoring of jobs increased;resultinginmanyfamiliesbeingforcedto leave their homesandseekworkoutsideofthevillage itself."
