Goodlettsville is one of the most historically important communities in Tennessee because it is home to the first practical handgun cartridge, called " bullet." It was developed by Colonel John Browning and first used in his guns in 1859. The town was founded in 1847 by General James Hogg and his family. The good old days were when bullets were all made from lead shot and carried around with you as a protection against bears or other animals that might attack you while you slept. Bullets still play an important role today as part of many types of self-defense drills across the United States. Goodlettsville also has some interesting stories about its history which can be found on the local website or through books and newspapers released over time. Goodlettsville was founded in 1829 by James Goodlett and his wife Polly. The original home of Goodlett's family still stands today, and is a museum called "The Old Home Place" which also contains an interpretive exhibit on James Goodlett's life and work. Goodlettsville has been an important community in Hardin County since its foundation. Early settlers were farmers who cultivated land around the town center. In 1853, when the first railroad arrived in that county, it connected with Chattanooga and provided new opportunities for peasants who had long relied on horse-drawn transportation to get to their work sites. In 1865, when General John Taney recognized Confederate General Jubal Early's march through Clarksville into Tennessee as defiance of Union policy, he ordered troops stationed at Greeneville to march southward to support Early there against any possible attack from Union forces near Chattanooga (this action helped solidify early Confederate support for Little River Valley). This move demonstrated Confederate President Jefferson Davis' intent to hold Tennessee until all aspects of the Confederacy could be examined—a goal that eventually led to secession during the Civil War. During Reconstruction following the war, many African American men worked as sharecroppers in Goodlettsville and other surrounding townships along with white men. After reconstruction ended in 1865, most African Americans left for automobiles and other opportunities available outside of Appalachia after years of discrimination fuelled by economic factors such as racism within both sides during Reconstruction; however some stayed behind until after World War II when they regained full civil rights under legislation passed by Congress act number 527 (the Civil Rights Act of 1964).

In 1828, Goodlettville became the first municipality in Tennessee to be established under the new state Constitution. By 1830, Goodlettsville had a population of over 100 residents and a schoolhouse. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in the mid-1840s when it had between 200 and 250 residents. However, by 1850, Goodlettsville's population had dropped below 100 people due to factors such asMQ changes within Tennessee that made farming more difficult and increased competition from neighboring towns. By 1860, Goodlettsville had only 10 residents remaining and ceased to exist as an independent municipality.
