Goodlettsville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,044 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is located northeast of Nashville on the Cumberland River. It began as a farming community and now has a small manufacturing sector. The town's name comes from George Washington Goodlett and his son Ebenezer Goodlett who donated land for the town in 1839. The first settler in Goodlettsville was Eli Brown. He built his house on what is now Main Street in 1838. In 1840, John Sowers built the first store in the area and it remains one of the oldest buildings still standing in Goodlettsville today. William Boggs opened another store soon after which started to grow commerce within the community. By 1850, there were 4 stores in goodlettville with over 100 residents- this growth continued until 1860 when only 2 stores remained open due to increasing competition from larger towns along the Cumberland River. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant came through Goodlettsville on his way to helparrison Gettysburg - he stopped at that time for dinner at Wigand’s restaurant which still stands today near where Grant parked his carriage outside of Independence Hall during his visit! This event helped start what would become known as "GoodlettsVILLE" nickname given to the small town by its early inhabitants because of their proximity to Nashville and similar events (such as visits by presidents). Over time other nearby communities also picked up this nickname including Murfreesboro (1898), Kingsport (1910), Brentwood (1915), Hillsboro (1920) and even Cooke City (2006). The river forms most of its boundaries; however, some land borders it including Gaston Avenue to the south and west, Old Highway 61 to the north, and UTEP Boulevard to the east.
