By 1830, there were over 250 people living in Germantown proper and 300 more scattered throughout surrounding counties. During the 1840s and 1850s, many manufacturing businesses were established in Germantown such asthe post office (1845), millinery stores (1850-60), saddlers' shops (1850-60), blacksmith shops (1851-56) and grist mills (1857). A number of churches also sprung up around this time such as Christ Church United Methodist church built 1852; First Baptist church built 1865; African American Methodist Episcopal church built 1871; White Protestant Reformed Dutch church built 1889/90; German Evangelical Lutheran church built 1902/03). During Reconstruction period following Civil War era, most white Americans left for various reasons such as political unrest or economic hardship back east while African Americans continued to be held captive by Confederate armies until they eventually became free in 1865 when Union troops finally took them captive again less than two years later t
