Germantown, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 2,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Memphis– Nashville–Avondale area. In 1827, McCulloch married Rachel Maddox and founded Germantown Academy which still exists today as one of the leading selective high schools in America. In 1830, Nicholas Gibbs began construction on what would become known as "Gibbsville" – an early cotton plantation that he developed into one of the largest plantations in Tennessee and one of the most successful slaveholding operations in American history. The venture failed but Gibbs continued to operate it until his death in 1865. Germantown attracted many people during its early years because it was close to some major slave markets and because there was plenty of timber available for building churches and other important infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges. Cotton became popular among Tennesseans after it became affordable due to increased production by American manufacturers following World War I. By 1800, about 60% of GermantOWN residents were enslaved; however this number decreased over time as free people moved into town from surrounding rural areas including Decatur County (where Germantown now lies). whites gradually replaced slaves with white employees while black Americans remained confined largely within African American households throughout much of antebellumTennessee

On October 12, 1865, while Union forces were fighting in Chattanooga under General Ulysses S Grant, Confederate troops attacked and burned down most of what remainedofbelieved to be Germantony’s historical center – including much important cultural heritage for whichthe town is still largely known today. The attack destroyed many homes and tomove away many residents who would have otherwise been able to Preservation efforts began immediately followingthe firestorm that followed. By November 1865 only a small remnantof Gmanticornians remained unaccounted for; most likely they escaped beforethe neighborhood sustained any serious damage from arsonism or looting committed by Confederate forces during their retreat fromChattanooga
