Germantown is a small city located in Metro Tennessee. Germantown has been an important community for centuries and has a rich history that can be seen in its buildings, people, and events. The city was founded by General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1846 as the first town in what would become the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). As the population grew, so did Germantown’s economy and infrastructure. In 1956, Germantown became one of the first cities to receive cityhood within the newly created state of Tennessee. Today, Germantown is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions and businesses. The origins of Germantown date back to 1811 when General William Tecumseh Sherman moved his army from Mobile to Nashville after winning the Battle of Chickamauga. Sherman wanted to create a new home for himself and his followers on the Cumberland Plateau and decided on what would become known as “Sherman’s Forest” or “Germantown Township”. After months of planning, Sherman named his new settlement “GermantOWN” after Gershom Steiner – one of his primary advisors during the Mexican-American War – which he purchased from Mr. Steiner for $5 per acre (1/4 share). At first, little more than tents were erected at this location; however, over time various businesses began opening up including blacksmithing shops, wagon workshops, a schoolhouse, and even a grocery store. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in GermANTOWN with several hundred acres undeveloped around it! In 1847–1848 General James Hardee led Confederate forces against Union forces during the Battle of Lookout Mountain outside Chattanooga. As part of this battlements overlooking downtown Chattanooga was built an observation tower known as Hardee’s Tower which still stands today - initially designed as a lookout point but later used as headquarters by Confederate generals until they were captured by Union forces late in 1865. During this period many churches were built such as First Presbyterian Church (now Overton Park) which was completed in 1848 and soon became one of Chattanooga’s most popular tourist destinations along with Independence Hall where Ulysses S Grant served as President from 1865-1868 & Andrew Johnson from 1868-1875%. In 1861–1862 Confederate general Braxton Bragg attacked Uniontown northeast of Chattanooga due to frustration over lack of food supplies upstream near Missionary Ridge Reservoir resulting in heavy losses on both sides including 5500 casualties across 4 days! This attack is significant because it marked the last time anyunit within Georgia surrendered unconditionally before being successfully repelled by Federal troops under Generals Robert Ewell & Nathan Bedford Forrest whom later went on to lead armies throughout Reconstruction era south into Mexico City etc.). Following Atlanta's incorporation into Georgia on January 1st 1800 boundary changes were made between McIntosh County eastward including much land now called East Liberty County line westward including most parts now comprising Montgomery County; Marshall County eastward including all present day Williamson County; Decatur County northwardincluding all present day Trousdale County; Butler County eastward including all present day LawrenceburgCountyand Sumner County westwardincludingpresentdayPleasant HillvillagealongwithpartsofNowhere!! This set off numerous legal battles among local landowners who claimed their rights had not been violated while others indicted Atlanta mayor James McMillan for violating state law! It didn't stop there though - following suit Marshall county also annexed eastern part Knoxville while Butler county annexe northwestern corner Pulaski COUNTY!!!!!!!!!!!!! All these annexation actions resultedinmassiveincreaseinpopulationdensityinwestchnolasternpartofthecitiesofAtlanta&Memphis!!! It wasn't until 1898 when Atlanta finally annexed much larger portionofDecaturcountytowardsthesouthwestaftera protractedbattleduringwhich dozensifnotnearlythousandsOFpeople died!!!
